A Boston manufacturer opened its doors to two schools on National Manufacturing Day.
Mastenbroek welcomed 30 Year 10 pupils to its factory on Thursday, 26th September, as it joined hundreds of companies across the UK in a country-wide celebration of UK engineering excellence.
The young people from Haven High (Boston) and Lincoln University Technical College were given a guided tour of Mastenbroek's factory, where they saw the company's trenching machines and crawler trucks being made. The students also learned about 3D computer modelling and the importance of hydraulics in engineering before seeing one of Mastenbroek's impressive machines close up.
"This was the first time we've been involved in National Manufacturing Day, and it was very rewarding to see how interested the young people who visited were in what we do here," says Christopher Pett, commercial director at Mastenbroek. "We firmly believe in the importance of attracting the next generation of engineers, and several members of our production and management team began their careers as apprentices. Hopefully, today will have inspired some of our visitors to pursue a career in engineering and manufacturing in the future."
Mastenbroek manufactured its first trencher for agricultural sub-surface land drainage in 1977. Since then, the company has grown into a global business working with customers worldwide, which are involved in agriculture, sports field drainage, and utility infrastructure projects and cable installation.
Organised by Make UK, National Manufacturing Day is a UK-wide celebration of manufacturing and a chance to raise the profile of the sector, which accounts for £224 billion of UK output, 41% of R&D and nearly half of the country's total exports.
National Manufacturing Day also promotes the opportunities presented by apprenticeships in the sector so that the next generation sees manufacturing as a future career.
