New sportsfield machine for Hugh Pearl  as it marks 40 years of working with Mastenbroek

A leading drainage and civil engineering contractor has strengthened its machinery line-up as it prepares for a busy summer undertaking sportsfield projects.

Hugh Pearl (Land Drainage) Ltd, which is celebrating its 70th year in business, added a Mastenbroek 10/12D Sportsfield trencher to its fleet earlier this month.

Established in 1955 by Hugh Pearl, the family-run Essex-based company initially focused on agricultural drainage but has, over the years, developed and expanded to offer reservoir and pond construction, motorway drainage, SuDS schemes, light civil engineering works and sports field drainage.

Hugh Pearl uses Mastenbroek's machinery in many of these areas as part of a 40-year-old relationship.

"We bought our first Mastenbroek machine – a 10/15 farm drainage trencher – back in 1983 and added a 712 trencher in 1988 when we first offered sportsfield services. Mastenbroek developed the 712 to become the 10/12D, which we bought in 2003.  Even though it is 22 years old, it is still running today, and it has served us very well in some challenging conditions. However, with our order book filling up fast and the need for absolute reliability, we decided it was time to add another Mastenbroek trencher to our fleet," says Adrian Rowell, Managing Director. "The new 10/12D will allow us to take on extra work and be more efficient, thanks to its dual pipe reels, improved engine, and hydraulic pumps, which mean quicker installation times."

Built for precision and performance, the 10/12D trencher offers on-grade sub-surface trenching for sports turf drainage. However, when its conveyor system and spoil chute are removed, the 10/12D is perfectly suited to agricultural drainage work.

Equipped with laser to maintain precise depth and grade, the 10/12D features a powerful digging chain drive with stepless, adjustable speed to adapt to soil conditions. Its heavy-duty undercarriage provides excellent traction on sports surfaces and saturated or low ground-bearing pressure soils.

The new trencher is Hugh Pearl's seventh Mastenbroek machine in its current fleet. The company also operates a 15/15, a 20/15, two CT12 tracked gravel carts, and a GT8 gravel trailer.

"I have to admit that even though our relationship with Mastenbroek spans four decades, we did consider other trenching manufacturers before committing to this latest machine," says Adrian. "However, Mastenbroek's reputation, build quality, and excellent service and parts supply made the decision easy. The 10/12D's safety improvements, operational efficiency, and features like the hydraulic lift on the soil retention box are real advantages for our operators and clients."

While the new 10/12D is primarily a replacement, Adrian has decided to continue operating its older model, which will allow the company to increase capacity and be flexible for specialist jobs.

"Our aim is to grow as much as possible, and this machine will help us achieve that by ensuring efficiency and customer satisfaction through accurate installation and clean working. And, by having the older 10/12D still in service, we're now even better equipped to take on multiple projects simultaneously."
